Thread: Watch Discussion Thread

Here's a get away on ebay:

I dig the design of this 1950s Elgin, and it is inscribed. In the 50s-early 70s Chevrolet sponsored soap box derbys as good clean fun for boys, and because it was Chevy, they attracted big celebs of the day like Roy Rogers to officiate the races. The winner of this watch was not the national champ, but perhaps he won one of the final heats.

The case is jacked up. You'd need to buy a different shockmaster for a replacement case. But it does run! I offered $45, the seller countered at $70, but I declined the counteroffer. (For me, $45 is all the money for a broken ass Elgin.) It needs to be fixed up and be on the arm of a dude who drives a 50s Chevy.

Just picked up this little number at an antique store for $20.00; needs a band, but it's keeping time.

At $20, how can you go wrong. Nice buy. Do you feel an addiction coming on?

I've collected watches for years; I'll snap a picture of a few of them.

And, I'd love to know how to polish the crystal.

    Polish Crystal:
Go to Hobby Lobby and pick up a packet of microfine sandpaper(they sell a 3m pack of small sheets ranging from 400 to 12,000) Use wet. Start with no more than 600(only if the crystal is really bad) and work your way down to 2500 and even 4000 or 6000 if you have lots of time. Next use a small bottle of 3m rubbing compound or Novus plastic polish and using clean bare fingers rapidly polish that salami until it is bright and shiny. This is one of those things that costs a lot upfront and if you are like me you have this stuff laying around. If not you may find a crystal polish kit online with enough to do a few watches.

The watch on post 9 of this thread is after this technique. It was lime a piece of wax paper with several deep scratches. Took about an hour to get it nice but Netflix passed the time.

Which one? Here's a little bit of interesting reading about the red digital watch:
