Thank you for posting this Michael.

I used to keep a sawed off police issue shotgun under my bed but I loaned it to a friend and never got it back. He since moved out of state so I gave up on ever seeing that again.

I used to own a SD40. Ron is right, the trigger is a bit spongy, about a 6 or 7 lb break. Not a bad gun at all for the price though and a 20.00 Apex trigger kit helps it a lot. It's a good choice for home defense on a budget. Not such a good gun for daily concealed carry though (IMO).

PS, I just wrote a fairly in depth post that may help you and a few others who were wondering about a first gun purchase.

The one that I have the big money in (FN Five seveN) is not really anything more than a range gun. I put a reflex sight on it which is hard to pick up in a hurry and it's a bit of an over penetrator. You are probably thinking of my M&P pistol in 9mm.

I'm always up for a good road trip. If you have any plans, I'll drive just about anywhere.

I've never even picked up a pistol(other than my dads Luger-which I never shot) but I agree with the idea of having every finger on the handle.
I guess it's useless to even consider a handgun if I can't get a permit for one. I think you have to prove you work in a bad neighborhood or something. Please forgive my naive-ness on the topic.

Would a Makarov make a good first gun - it's what I've been seriously considering the last couple months. Or should I go straight for a 1911?

I have no experience whatsoever with them...sounds Russian.

I can say that the 1911 is quite possibly America's favorite gun. I have shot them and they really are sweet, even in .45 they are quite tame. Heavy but tame.
